Culture and heritage, at the heart of Basque traditions!

Your camping holiday in Bidart will also be an opportunity to discover the local culture and traditions: Basque song and traditional dance (Mutxiko), Basque power games and pelota games, not to mention the cuisine on offer every Tuesday of the summer in the village square.
You haven't tasted the famous Basque cake yet?! Visit the Moulin de Bassilour, an old mill dating back to 1741 and renowned for its regional pastries: cream cakes and black cherry jams, shortbreads, metures (corn flour breads) and loaves (aniseed corn cakes). Here's something to enjoy!
Other skills to discover: the workshop of the Basque Knifemakers where the authentic Mizpira is made, an artisanal pocket knife made of scarified medlar, but also the workshop Ona Pilota which perpetuates an emblematic tradition of the Basque Country by making balls and chisteras by hand.
As for heritage, Bidart is not lacking in attractions: old labourdine houses, churches, chapels, laundrette...
Above the ocean, you can discover the Chapelle de la Madeleine and its esplanade, one of the most emblematic sites in Bidart. A few steps away, the Second World War Memorial recalls the fate of Basque refugees from Spain, the bombings of Biarritz and the Basque Resistance during the occupation. A little further on, you can visit the church of Our Lady of the Assumption (16th century), which houses oriental style baptismal font donated by Queen Nathalie of Serbia in 1902.
Further north stands the impressive castle of Ilbarritz, perched atop Handia Hill. It was built in 1897 by Gustave Huguenin for Baron Albert de l'Espée to house the largest organ ever designed for a private individual.
To the south, on the Atalaye plateau, at the end of Parlementia beach, the "Koskenia" watchtower is also worth a visit. It was once used as a whale-watching observation post, an activity that had been firmly established in Bidart since the 16th century.
